The Aftereffects of My Childhood NDE

By Ingrid Honkala, Ph.D.

I was born and raised in Bogota, Colombia, where I lived with my parents and three sisters. Since I was very little my parents discovered that my learning abilities were astonishing, but that was not all. Later they also discovered that I could see and hear things that no one else could. All this seemed to be tied up with the aftermath of a near-death experience (NDE) when I drowned at the age of two. Not long after, I started to communicate with Beings of Light who have guided me through a journey of miracles, not just around the world, but also through the barriers of time. With them, I have been able to access past life experiences of myself and others, as well as future events.

When my NDE happened, I was just a baby. I didn’t have any preconceived notions about an NDE. At the time I was too young even to understand that I had essentially died. All I knew was that I’d left my body and had gone to a place of indescribable well-being. However, this experience didn’t feel unfamiliar to me; somehow, I comprehended that the current life that I was living was just a continuation of a very long existence.

As I grew up and remembered my drowning, I could never get away from the question, “How could I have seen my body lifeless if I was still alive?” This experience made it clear to me that there was an existence beyond the body. Like the shell of a crab is an extension of the crab itself, our body is also but a shell, and when it is not needed it will fall away. Before I was three, I was gifted with knowing that I had existed for a very long time. In fact, I have come and gone in different realms many times, wearing many different shells.

Knowing that I am an eternal light being has also freed me from fearing death. I have realized that nothing can hurt the essence of what I am. During one of the most terrorizing life experiences that one could find oneself in, I was able to validate this truth for myself. At a beautiful beach setting, as I was about to be raped and murdered I looked away from the scene to witness an astonishing horizon. In that instant, I had a complete surrender and aligned with the truth that my spirit cannot die. The first thought that crossed my mind was: “Today, is a good day to die!” As a result of being fearless, my mind was clear and my inner-wisdom guided me to take the necessary steps to get out of the seemingly impossible situation. The validation that I cannot die has brought me to live my life fearlessly.

Although my NDE and following out-of-body (OBEs) and spiritually transformative experiences (STEs) gave me incredible gifts, I spent most of my life feeling different and alone for two reasons: (1) my drowning happened at such a young age I did not have the language to understand and process what had occurred, and (2) I spent over 40 years not knowing or finding anyone who I could talk to who had had a similar experience. My NDE and STEs opened for me doors beyond anyone’s understanding at the time, and only through all these years, thanks to the help and guidance that I have received from spirit guides, spiritual teachers, books and now by groups like IANDS where I have met many people who have lived similar experiences, I am able to understand it and share about it.

However, to get where I am today, I had to go through a lot of suffering. When I was nineteen, the Beings of Light told me, “Someday your life experiences will talk for you and you will pass our teachings to others.” Today the meaning of this message is clear to me, that my hardships are enabling me to relate and help others to reconnect with their inner wisdom. People don’t need to be in the dark when we have in our hands the help they need to be in the Light!

My autobiography, A Brightly Guided Life, reveals how after having a near-death experience at the age of nearly three, the first glimpses of heaven were revealed to me, and the doors that allow me to communicate with Beings of Light were opened. Since then a myriad of experiences, that many might describe as mystical and perhaps impossible, have crossed my path. However, the Beings of Light have made it clear to me that I am not here to convince anyone about anything but to be a giver of Light.

To accomplish this purpose, I have been guided through an amazing journey of unimaginable challenges, awakenings and miracles, and along the way, I have become the vehicle to help others to rise-up from some of the deepest states of hopelessness and bring them back to life. Through helping others, I was also able to become aware of my own shadows and to overcome them as well. For all of these experiences, I am forever grateful. Now I want to continue awakening, growing and giving anything I can to anyone who is open to listening.
